Lead Narrative Designer

As the lead narrative designer at Cuemath, I played a pivotal role in intertwining mathematics with storytelling, creating a "Math Universe" where numbers and narratives converge to inspire young learners.

Cuemath is a startup with a gamified Math learning app, and a cool rewards feature designed to motivate and engage students: a series of comic books that unfold in a universe where math is the key to heroism and adventure.

In my role as the lead narrative designer, I had a fabulous time writing these comics:

  • World Building: There were initial seeds already planted, but I had to flesh out

    • Thomas Tallman & Friends: Targeted at K-2, this series introduces a charming world of animals where math is woven into their daily adventures, making learning accessible and fun for the youngest minds

    • Zero Squad: For grades 3-5, set in '90s India, this narrative follows Eka and Dvita, kids who use their mathematical prowess to solve crimes, blending cultural richness with logical solutions

    • Kalina and the Shards of Singularity: Aimed at grades 6-8, this saga features Kalina, a space-and-time-traveling explorer, challenging older students with more complex mathematical concepts through hardcore adventures

  • Narrative Development:

I crafted 2 seasons (10 comic issues each) of story arcs for each property. These were then broken into smaller chunks for 3-4 panel installments, each needing to end on enough of a cliffhanger to entice kids to come back for more.

  • Character Design and Empowerment: I role I personally took on was designing relatable and diverse characters, particularly focusing on strong female leads to challenge and change the gender stereotypes associated with math, encouraging all students to see themselves as capable mathematicians.

The Cuemath learning product is used in 70+ countries around the world.

All stories are built standing on the shoulders of giants, and require a ton of research. Some sources I referred to in building these comics were

Comics: Tinkle, Tintin, Halo Jones

TV: Peg + Cat, Daniel Tiger

Books: The “Murderous Math” series - Kjartan Poskitt
